i have taught extensively in the us and uk, but also in france and germany. in the us, i have taught at hofstra university, the university of north carolina-greensboro, indiana university, boston university, the university of pennsylvania, and currently at the university of kentucky. i have also taught at the sorbonne in paris. i have also conducted workshops in the uk and abroad, including india and taiwan. my research is interdisciplinary, focusing especially on the english renaissance and the early modern period, and has ranged from the study of english, french, and german literary and theatre texts to the cultural history of early modern medicine. my doctoral research examined the representation of political power and authority in english and french early modern dramatic and literary texts. i am an affiliated faculty member at the clemson school of art, where i teach courses on the arts of theatre, performance, and film, and on the history of the arts. i also hold joint appointments in the history and english departments at clemson, where i teach courses on the english renaissance and early modern literature. i have published articles on early modern drama and performance theory and criticism, as well as on the representation of women and minorities in english literature and theatre in the renaissance and early modern periods. i have also published on the history of the arts and medicine, including on the representation of the body, illness, and the physical sciences in the early modern period.

as a poet, i have published numerous poems and two chapbooks of my own poetry, and have several volumes of my own scholarly poetry and translations forthcoming. i have also published several articles on poetry and poetics in the early modern period, including on the critical theory of giorgio agamben and the reception of petrarchan poetics in the early modern period. i have also published a monograph, the fictions of the body: physiology and the invention of human subjectivity in the early modern period (palgrave macmillan, 2012), which explores the early modern period as a critical moment for the theorization of the body. my critical theory interests have also led me to focus on the representation of race and ethnicity in early modern literature and art. i have published several articles and chapters on the representation of the non-western in early modern literature and theatre, and have written a novel, redemptions son (2015), which is set in early modern bohemia. i am currently writing a book-length manuscript, tentatively titled the wound of empire: the representation of race and ethnicity in early modern literature and art, which explores the representation of the non-western in the early modern period as a critical moment for the theorization of race and ethnicity.
